The cheapest ways to send flowers (that still look good)

Short answer: the cheapest delivered flowers we found were boxed bouquets on standard delivery. A dozen red roses from FTD or ProFlowers came to $49.74 before tax ($29.75 plus a $19.99 delivery charge) on Nov 3, 2026 [FTD] [ProFlowers]. The biggest savings come from avoiding rush, weekend, and holiday surcharges, and from choosing a box over a vase.
Cheap flowers that arrive looking sad aren’t a bargain. These seven moves keep the price down without making the gift feel cheap. Each one comes with the numbers behind it.
1. Compare the delivered total, not the sticker price
Almost every online bouquet adds a fee at checkout: 97.84% of the 6,167 products SendFlowers.io tracks, with a median of $19.99 [SendFlowers.io]. A bouquet that looks $10 cheaper can end up costing more if its fee is higher. Our price check page shows delivered totals side by side.
2. Choose a boxed bouquet if the recipient can arrange it
FTD’s dozen roses cost $29.75 boxed and $34 with a glass vase [FTD]. At 1-800-Flowers, the vase version is $15 more ($49.99 vs $64.99) [1-800-Flowers]. Boxed flowers often arrive in bud and need a day or two to open, so they suit a “just because” gift better than a same-evening date.
3. Pick a weekday and order a few days ahead
Retailers price delivery by date. FTD says its charges vary by delivery location, shipping time, and calendar day [FTD], and the SendFlowers medians are the cheapest date available, before rush and holiday surcharges [SendFlowers.io]. If the date is flexible, check two or three delivery dates before you pay.
4. Skip the peak weeks if you can
Government price data shows flower and plant prices jumping in February. The consumer price index for indoor plants and flowers rose 4.0% to 4.8% from January to February in each of 2024, 2025, and 2026, then fell back by April [U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics]. Sending “early Valentine’s” flowers on Feb 10 instead of Feb 14 won’t always save money, but avoiding the rush window gives you more dates to compare. More in seasonal flower prices.
5. Use a free-shipping threshold only if you’d spend that anyway
UrbanStems ships free on orders over $140 [UrbanStems]. That’s a saving on a large gift and a trap on a small one. Spending $40 more to save a $20 fee is not saving.
6. Do the math on memberships
1-800-Flowers’ Celebrations Passport costs $19.99 for the first year, then $29.99 a year [1-800-Flowers], and waives standard shipping and service charges on eligible weekday deliveries [1-800-Flowers]. With a typical 1-800-Flowers fee of about $18.99 [SendFlowers.io], it roughly pays for itself on the second eligible weekday order in a year. Teleflora runs a similar membership [Teleflora]. Read the exclusions before you join, and set a reminder before it renews.
7. Call a local florist and ask for “designer’s choice”
Local shops can use whatever is fresh and plentiful that week. You won’t know the exact flowers in advance, but you set the budget. Local prices for a set item vary widely: a dozen long-stem red roses averaged $71.99 in Indiana and $126.65 in Hawaii in FinanceBuzz’s 2026 survey [FinanceBuzz]. Ask for the delivered total on the phone. Our local vs online guide has questions to ask.
What we wouldn’t do to save money
- Don’t send boxed buds for a funeral service or a hospital stay. Arranged flowers matter there. See sympathy flower costs.
- Don’t pick the cheapest same-day option on a holiday without checking the cutoff time. Late orders are where surcharges pile up.
