Local florist or online flower delivery: which costs less?

Short answer: for the lowest price on a simple gift, an online boxed bouquet usually wins: a dozen red roses delivered for about $50 [FTD]. For an arranged, hand-delivered gift, a good local florist is often similar in price or better, because many online orders end up with a local florist anyway [Teleflora]. Local florists averaged $93.07 for a dozen long-stem reds in 2026 [FinanceBuzz].
“Shop local” and “order online” sound like opposites, but in flowers they often overlap. Knowing how the money moves helps you decide where to place the order.
Three ways your order can travel
- Shipped from a farm or warehouse. The flowers arrive by carrier in a box, often in bud. This is how the cheapest online bouquets work, like FTD’s $29.75 boxed dozen [FTD].
- Relayed to a local florist. You order from a national brand; it sends the order to a shop near the recipient, which arranges and delivers it. Teleflora says its service fee covers placing your order with a local florist who creates and hand-delivers it [Teleflora].
- Ordered directly from a local florist. You call or use the shop’s own website. No middle step, and you can talk to the person making it.
Comparing the price of an arranged dozen
- Teleflora’s Rose Classique dozen, arranged in a vase by a local florist: $69.99 plus a service fee [Teleflora]; the median Teleflora fee is $19.99 [SendFlowers.io], so about $90 delivered.
- Local florist average for a dozen long-stem reds: $93.07, with state averages from $71.99 to $126.65 [FinanceBuzz]. FinanceBuzz doesn’t say whether delivery is included, and local delivery charges vary by shop.
So for an arranged dozen, a national network and a local shop are in the same ballpark, and a shop in a lower-cost state may come in under the network price. Ask for the delivered total to be sure.
Local shops don’t all charge the same
Even for identical designs, local prices vary. The same FTD Rose Bloom Wristlet was $33.99 at one shop and $58 at another when we checked [Super Rose] [Sunrise Floral & Gifts]. Calling two shops is worth it.
When to go local
- Funerals. A florist near the funeral home often knows the staff, the timing, and the room.
- Weddings and events. You need a consultation, a quote, and setup.
- Specific requests. A favorite flower, a color, a note on the card: easier to explain to a person.
- Problems. If something goes wrong, the person who made it can usually fix it fastest.
When online makes more sense
- Lowest price on a simple gift. A boxed bouquet is hard to beat.
- You don’t know any florists near the recipient. A network finds one for you.
- Subscriptions and repeat gifts that are easy to manage in one account.
Both are popular: in NRF’s Valentine’s survey, 38.2% of shoppers planned to buy online and 18.8% at a florist [Medill Spiegel Research Center, Northwestern University].
Questions to ask a local florist
- What is the total, including delivery and tax?
- What’s fresh and plentiful this week?
- What time will it arrive, and will you call if no one’s home?
- Do you deliver to this funeral home, hospital, or office regularly?
