Mother’s Day flower prices and how to spend wisely

Short answer: flowers are the most popular Mother’s Day gift. 75% of shoppers planned to buy them in 2026, and Americans were expected to spend $3.2 billion on Mother’s Day flowers [National Retail Federation]. For a single delivered bouquet from a big online florist, budget the bouquet price plus about $20 for delivery [SendFlowers.io], and more for weekend delivery.
Mother’s Day always lands on a Sunday, and that one detail drives a lot of the cost, because Sunday delivery isn’t available everywhere. Here’s what people spend and how to get the most for yours.
What people spend
- 75%of Mother’s Day shoppers planned to buy flowers, the top gift category [National Retail Federation]
- $3.2Bprojected U.S. spending on Mother’s Day flowers in 2026 [National Retail Federation]
- $284.25average planned spend on all Mother’s Day gifts, a record [National Retail Federation]
NRF surveyed 7,877 adults from April 1 to 8, 2026 [National Retail Federation]. NRF doesn’t publish a per-person flower figure for Mother’s Day, so we can’t give an average bouquet spend from that survey.
What common Mother’s Day gifts cost
Prices from retailer pages we checked on Nov 3, 2026. Mother’s Day collections change each spring, so treat these as a guide to price tiers rather than exact May prices.
| Gift | Price before delivery | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Dozen red roses, boxed (FTD) | $29.75 | [FTD] |
| Dozen red roses, bouquet only / with vase (1-800-Flowers) | $49.99 / $64.99 | [1-800-Flowers] |
| Peace lily plant, small / medium / large (1-800-Flowers) | $54.99 / $74.99 / $104.99 | [1-800-Flowers] |

Do prices go up in May?
The government’s price index for indoor plants and flowers doesn’t show a clear May spike the way it does in February. In 2024, 2025 and 2026, the May reading was only 0.4% to 1.1% above April [U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics]. The bigger Mother’s Day cost risk is delivery: fees vary by calendar day [FTD], and weekend or holiday dates can carry more.
How to spend wisely
- Deliver on Friday or Saturday. FTD’s carrier deliveries run Monday through Saturday, with Sunday only on select holidays [FTD]. A Friday delivery means the flowers are open and looking their best by Sunday.
- Consider a plant. A peace lily can keep going long after a bouquet has faded, which makes the cost per week lower.
- Watch membership exclusions. 1-800-Flowers’ Passport waives fees only on eligible weekday deliveries [1-800-Flowers], and Teleflora’s membership covers standard service fees on certain orders [Teleflora]. A Sunday delivery may not qualify.
- Order the week before. You’ll see more dates and avoid same-day charges.
